Preserve funding for housing agency

Last month, my wife, Susan, and I celebrated our joyous second-year anniversary in our dream home.

This occasion was made possible by the assistance and education provided to us by our friends at the Regional Housing Alliance of La Plata County in Durango.

Jennifer Lopez and her great staff encouraged Susan and I to attend one of their classes and “to just get a feel for what we could expect as we entered this challenging journey of buying our first home.”

We left that class with a real sense of accomplishment and a better understanding of our hopes and dreams, and a true feeling that we really could make this happen at such a late stage of our lives, as we were in our mid- to late 50s.

Several months later, we were able to attend our own “closing ceremony” at the land title offices, with our friends from RHA in attendance, still guiding us in the process. It was a wonderful day, to say the least.

This Christmas will be our first Christmas with the newest granddaughter – Saylor – and in our new house. A joyous occasion, for sure.

We want to give the great staff at the Regional Housing Alliance of La Plata County a huge thank you again.

It has come to our attention that their funding for 2013 could be severely cut by La Plata County because of the same budget cuts that we all are experiencing during the fiscal crisis. We wanted to express our concerns about this possibility and to let everyone know that they, too, can own their dream home with the assistance of the RHA, but only if they work to help keep the funding alive.

I urge everyone to please put in a good word for these wonderful dream merchants over at the Regional Housing Alliance of La Plata County.

Here’s to wishing you all a very Merry Christmas.
