DHS has five survive at Warrior Classic

Ten men entered, five men still in.

The Durango High School wrestling team has three wrestlers in the semifinals and two still working through the consolation bracket out of a total of ten wrestlers after Day 1 of the Warrior Classic in Grand Junction.

At 113 Matthew Lavengood, ranked No. 4 in the state by coloradopreps.com this week, will wrestle today for a place in the top six, as will Nick Tarpley, ranked No. 3, at 152 and Daniel Gustafson at 220.

“Five guys still in, which is nice, and three places ... but guaranteed top six so far with those guys in the semis,” DHS head coach Doug Cuddie said.

“We haven’t had that many since I’ve been here yet, so that’s a good day so far,” he said. “All three of them (wrestled great), to be honest with you. To make the semifinals at this tournament, you’ve got to beat some good kids and win some matches that are close.”

Dylan Anthony and Patrick Cunnion still have a chance to place through wrestlebacks.

“(Today’s) a new day, hopefully,” Cuddie said.
