Bayfield wrestled “really tough” against some “really tough” competition Saturday at the Piedra Vista Tournament.
“We wrestled really well,” Bayfield High School head coach Todd McMenimen said. “We got scoring out of pretty much everybody on the team.”
Colter McMenimen, the coach’s son, and Joe Zink were 5-0 at 126 and 145 pounds, respectively.
Garrett Maw was 2-0 at 132 pounds for BHS.
Drake Rhodes (138), Michael Goodman (183) and Matt Eckstein (heavyweight) all were 4-1 for the Wolverines.
Jon Roberts was 3-2 at 170 pounds for BHS.
BHS assistant coach Jordan Larsen “really has been pressing to be physical, to let teams know that when they wrestle us, they’re in a match any time they step on the mat with us,” coach McMenimen said.
“I think we finally got that through. Even in the matches we lost, I think our opponents knew they were in a match.”
Tyler Beebe (120), James Young (160) and Matt Certes (220) each were 1-4, and Miles Popke was 0-1 at 152 before withdrawing from the Piedra Vista Tournament with an injury.
“It was an impressive tournament,” coach McMenimen said Saturday night. “I thought we took a big step forward.”
