Durango Fire & Rescue Authority personnel work at the scene of a fatal two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 160 east of Elmore’s Corner on Saturday afternoon. One person was killed in the accident.

One female passenger was killed and two drivers were seriously injured Saturday afternoon in a head-on collision in the 3100 block of U.S. Highway 160, about three miles east of Elmore’s Corner.

The accident closed the highway for about two hours, and eastbound drivers were detoured at Elmore’s Corner. Some vehicles remained waiting in both directions for the scene to clear.

The identities of the victims were not immediately available pending notification of family, said Trooper Josh Lewis of the Colorado State Patrol public information office.

Lewis said CSP troopers arrived at the scene three minutes after being notified at 2:24 p.m. Other responding agencies included La Plata County Sheriff’s Office and Durango Fire & Rescue Authority.

Lewis was not able to give additional details, but at least one of the victims had to be extricated from a vehicle. The injured were the male driver of a white Dodge Durango and the female driver of a white Toyota 4Runner. One of the injured reportedly had a broken leg and other injuries.

One of the vehicles may be registered to a Durango address while the other appears to be registered to an Arvada address.

Personal belongings and even a piece of furniture were tossed out of one or both of the vehicles.

The Dodge Durango apparently was traveling westbound, and the Toyota 4Runner was eastbound.

There were two passengers in the Durango, including the passenger who was pronounced dead at the scene by La Plata County Coroner Jann Smith. The Toyota had just the female driver.
