Beasts of the Southern Wild. HHHH A settlement off the New Orleans coast lives like a Third World country. Which, it turns out, ain’t so bad. Rated PG-13.

Gaslight Cinema

(102 Fifth St. Next to the railroad depot, 247-8133)

Les Misérables. (No Ebert rating) Nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread seems fair, right? Victor Hugo’s novel did well and the Broadway show did OK, too; it’s not a stretch to think that this movie might make a few dollars as well. Not rated.

Lincoln. HHHH Daniel Day-Lewis delivers a spot-on performance as the Great Emancipator in Spielbergian splendor. Rated PG-13.

Durango Stadium 9

(Next to Durango Mall, 247-9799)

Beloved. HH (Wednesday only.) A story about the complicated love lives of a mother and daughter in London. (See review this page.) Not rated.

Texas Chainsaw 3D. (No Ebert rating; in digital 3-D with surcharge.) Sometimes it’s refreshing and reassuring to know what you’re getting and then get it, even if “it” is watching people get hacked to death by a chain saw in 3-D. Rated R.

Promised Land. (No Ebert rating.) Matt Damon is the evil oil and gas guy and John Krasinski doesn’t want him coming in and ruining his town no matter what. Rated R.

Django Unchained. (No Ebert rating) Tarantino’s latest bloodbath has Jamie Foxx as an ex-slave who returns to the plantation owned by Leo DiCaprio to free his wife from bondage. If only this had actually happened. Rated R.

Parental Guidance. (No Ebert rating) Billy Crystal and Bette Midler are grandparents who have their own ideas about how to raise their ultra-modern grandkids when they get baby-sitting duty. This sounds just awful. Rated PG.

Jack Reacher. (No Ebert rating.) A military sniper who shot five “random” victims says he didn’t do it and Tom Cruise says so, too. So look out, crooks. Rated PG-13.

This is 40. (No Ebert rating.) They made a sequel to “Knocked Up” and this is it. If you don’t know what “Knocked Up” was, so much the better. Rated R.

The Guilt Trip. (No Ebert rating) Seth Rogan is an inventor who for some reason takes his mom (Barbra Streisand) with him on a road trip to hawk the thing nationwide. Imagine a few thousand miles in a car with Streisand and you get the gist of this one. Rated PG-13.

Monsters, Inc. HHH It was re-released in 3-D, but this is the 2-D version. So I guess it’s just a re-release now. Same movie, though, in case you’ve been unable to find it for the last 12 years. Rated G.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. (In standard format and digital 3-D with surcharge; no Ebert rating.) In which we meet Bilbo, Gandalf and Gollum; kind of like a “Before They Were Rock Stars” for the Lord of the Rings crowd. Rated PG-13.

Skyfall. HHHH They call it the best Bond yet, and it’s got the box office clout to back it up. Rated PG-13.
