The Bayfield High School girls basketball team returned from the holiday break with a pair of victories Friday in the Aztec Invitational.
The Wolverines (5-3) beat Cuba, N.M., 57-54. Then, the Wolverines stopped Wingate, Ariz., 56-43.
“The first one looked a little like the first game after a long Christmas break,” Bayfield head coach Ronnie Posey said. “But we gutted it out.”
Jaida Ross led the balanced Wolverines with 14 points. Micaela Knickerbocker and Haley Clarke scored 11 each.
Destiny McGhehey added seven for the BHS girls (4-3).
“Layne Bulwan played some really good minutes off the bench. And we played her all over the floor,” Posey said.
“Chanel McCloskey did a good job off the bench helping at the point, too,” Posey said.
The second game, Posey said, was one of the Wolverines’ best of the season.
“We played a better team. This game, academically, we played our best game of the game,” Posey said.
“We showed a lot of improvement.
McGhehey led the way with 16 points. Clarke added 13. Kirby Brown contributed six off the bench.
“We are getting deeper and deeper,” Posey said.
The Wolverines will play big-school Artesia today in Aztec.
