Fresh start for Bayfield, Ignacio

Basketball teams resume season today

The New Year offers a fresh start for local high school basketball teams. And the New Year begins today.

Teams from Bayfield and Ignacio will return to their respective courts to reopen the 2012-13 season tonight.

The Wolverines will host Montezuma-Cortez today at Bayfield in nonconference games for the BHS varsity girls and boys.

The Ignacio Bobcats will hit the road for San Juan Basin League openers at Dolores tonight. Girls and boys varsity teams are scheduled to play, beginning with the girls game at 5:30 p.m.

The Bayfield girls (5-4) got the jump on the 2013 schedule when they picked up three games in the Aztec Invitational last weekend.

The Wolverines won two of three and lost only in the tournament championship to New Mexico big school Artesia.

The Wolverines beat Wingate, N.M., and Cuba., N.M., in the earlier games at Aztec.

The Bayfield girls will take on a winless Cortez girls team (0-7), coming off two losses at the Palisade Holiday Tournament right before the break.

Conversely, the Bayfield boys will be looking for their first victory of the season when they host Cortez at 7 p.m. today at the BHS gym.

The Wolverines (0-4) lost at Piedra Vista to conclude the 2012 portion of the schedule.

They will face a 2-6 Cortez boys team that also is coming off a pair of losses in the Palisade Holiday Tournament.

Meanwhile, the No. 6-ranked Ignacio boys team (Class 2A) will put its state ranking on the line tonight at Dolores.

The Bobcats (4-1) nearly beat the No. 6 team in Class 3A (Pagosa Springs) in a nonconference game right before the holiday break.

The Ignacio boys lost 53-50 in what coach Chris Valdez called his team’s most complete game thus far.

The Dolores boys are 3-4 going into tonight’s game against the ranked Bobcats.

The Dolores girls will take a 5-2 record into tonight’s matchup against the Ignacio girls (3-2) and first-year head coach Just Whitt.

The Ignacio girls also are coming off a tough loss to Pagosa Springs (45-42) right before the break.
