Health department announces new hire

Mip VanSuchtelen has been hired as San Juan Basin Health’s Drug Free Communities grant manager.

Most recently, VanSuchtelen has instructed sociology, coordinated volunteers for service learning and managed a variety of outreach activities at San Juan College in Farmington. Born in Holland, she now lives in Durango. The Drug Free Communities program seeks to strengthen collaboration among community entities and reduce substance abuse among young people.

Workers’ compensation seminar set for Jan. 16

Pinnacol Assurance and Mountain West Insurance and Financial Services will host a seminar on the workers’ compensation changes occurring in 2013 from noon to 1 p.m. Jan. 16 at Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

The changes are affecting employers that are experience rated on their workers’ compensation. The seminar will explain how experience modifications are calculated, the impact of losses with the new split-point change, and the variables that impact an experience modification.

This seminar will be beneficial for office managers, controllers, chief financial officers and business owners who handle the day-to-day workers’ compensation policies.

Chamber forum informs about group’s benefits

Member Benefits Boot Camp, a workshop for members of the Durango Chamber of Commerce, will offer information about how to maximize benefits from the chamber. The workshop will begin at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 16 at Durango Public Library.

Benefits include job postings, coupon postings, Reference USA data access and access to the Tools for Business Success module.

The event is free to members, but reservations are required. Light refreshments will be provided.
