The Fort Lewis College women’s basketball team got a big lift with a weekend sweep of Chadron State and Black Hills State, and the Skyhawks’ defensive performance was a big reason why.
And one of their players reaped the rewards.
Ashley Kuchar earned Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her role in the two weekend victories, wins that pushed the Skyhawks over .500 (4-3) in the RMAC for the first time this season following a rough start.
Kucher, a 5-8 guard from Provo, Utah, had five steals, two blocks and six defensive rebounds to help pace the Skyhawks, who return home to play New Mexico Highlands and Western New Mexico this weekend.
She was no slouch on the offensive end, either. Kuchar came out firing after the holiday break, scoring 15 points against Chadron State before tying her career-high with 24 points, six 3-pointers and three steals in the win over the Yellow Jackets last Saturday.
Fort Lewis has won four of its last five games and will look to get its 5-6 overall record above the .500 mark this weekend.
