Grants eases past Ignacio girls

The Ignacio High School girls basketball team ran into a pressure, trapping defense Friday at the annual Kirtland Central Tournament.

The Bobcats, after a close first half, fell 60-44 to Grants, N.M., another team that causes havoc with its full-court press, according to head coach Justa Whitt.

“Again, it was turnovers that caused us problems,” Whitt said. “They were one of those bigger schools that really runs the trap. Once we got in the trap, we couldn’t get out.”

The Bobcats trailed by only four points late in the first half.

But Grants hit two 3-pointers to go up by 10.

“It really was a pretty decent game for us,” Whitt said. “We just had too many turnovers.”

Michelle Simmons led the Bobcats with 13 points and eight rebounds. Cloe Seibel add seven points and nine rebounds.

“Cloe played really well,” Whitt said.

Mariah Vigil added eight points for the Ignacio girls, 4-4 overall.

The Bobcats will play at 12:30 p.m. today against an opponent to be determined.
