Three Bayfield High School wrestlers survived the opening day of the annual Sand Devil Tournament in Page, Ariz., on Friday.
The trio will wrestle in the tournament semifinals Saturday morning.
Two other Wolverines remain alive in the consolation brackets.
“We’ve had better days,” Bayfield head coach Todd McMenimen said.
“We had some kids who just didn’t show up to wrestle,” McMenimen said. “It’s probably the most disappointing weekend we’ve had.”
Tyler Beebe (120 pounds), Colter McMenimen (126) and Matt Eckstein (heavyweight) won their matches Friday for Bayfield to reach the tournament semifinals.
“I’m most impressed with Tyler. He looked good,” Todd McMenimen said. “Tyler was the one who stepped it up.”
He’ll take on a wrestler from Camp Verde, Ariz., on Saturday morning.
Eckstein also will take on a Camp Verde wrestler in Saturday’s tournament semifinals.
Colter McMenimen will take on a hometown wrestler from Page in the 126-pound semifinals.
Michael Goodman (182) and Matt Certes (220) will continue wrestling in the consolation bracket for the Wolverines.
