Defense wins Southwestern League openers.
The Durango High School boys basketball team rode out a short-lived Grand Junction Central lead and a little longer comeback attempt to win their low-scoring league opener 39-28 over the Warriors in Grand Junction.
“It was another blue-collar win,” DHS head coach Alan Batiste said.
Ty Elliott scored a game-high 19 points.
Durango trailed 18-14 at the halfway point before going on a 15-0 run to start the second half. The Demons’ defense held the Warriors scoreless in the third quarter.
“Our defense stepped up holding them to zero points in the third quarter,” Batiste said.
Central pulled within five in the final frame, then DHS reopened their lead at the free throw line.
“We didn’t shoot the ball very well,” Batiste said. “The boys played hard, though.”
Durango (8-2, 1-0 SWL) will play Fruita Monument in another SWL game at 1:30 p.m. today in Fruita.
