The Wolverines turned over a new leaf Saturday in Page, Ariz.
“We showed up ready to wrestle,” Bayfield head coach Todd McMenimen said after the Wolverines placed four wrestlers at the Sand Devil Tournament.
“We wrestled much better. I was pleased with the effort, no question,” said McMenimen, who was less than pleased after Friday’s rounds at the Arizona tournament.
Two BHS wrestlers finished third: heavyweight Matt Eckstein and 126-pounder Colter McMenimen.
“Matt really looked good out there,” Todd McMenimen said. “And Colter did a really good job.”
Matt Certes finished fourth at 220 pounds.
Tyler Beebe added a sixth at 120 pounds.
“The wrestler who impressed me the most this weekend was Tyler Beebe,” McMenimen said. “We found a new Tyler Beebe.”
McMenimen said the Bayfield 120-pounder had strong matches all weekend. Outside of a scoring problem, he likely would have wrestled for third place at Page, McMenimen said.
“Tyler continued to wrestle well. It was like a switch flipped with his wrestling,” the BHS first-year head coach said.
McMenimen said the Sand Devil organizers added an informal second-chance tournament Saturday for those wrestlers who were eliminated Friday.
“So we got some good wrestling in for all the guys, which was good,” McMenimen said.
Dom Brittain won his first varsity match for Bayfield in Saturday’s second-chance tournament.
“That was good ... he really needed that one,” McMenimen said.
