Pagosa Springs wrestlers tilt Wolverines

Herald Staff Report

Pagosa Springs used a variety of pins and points to beat Bayfield 48-23 in a wrestling dual Thursday night.

“Pagosa kind of handed it to us. They wrestled really well. They were on fire,” Bayfield head coach Todd McMenimen said.

“We didn’t do our part, unfortunately.”

The Wolverines picked up three pins and a technical fall (16-0) win by Colter McMenimen at 126 pounds.

Matt Eckstein, Bayfield’s heavyweight, defeated state-ranked Creede Wylie of Pagosa springs with a third-period pin.

“It was complete work on Matt’s part. He basically got him in a bear hug ... and pinned him,” coach McMenimen said.

Tyler Beebe of Bayfield won by pin at 120 pounds.

“He continued to build (on last weekend),” McMenimen said. “He really got after it.”

Allec Rodriguez, returning from illness, scored a first-period pin in his 132-pound match.

“Allec was sick last week. He didn’t make the trip to Page (Ariz.) with us. But he looked good coming off the illness,” McMenimen said.

He said the Wolverines lost a couple of tough matches: One came when Dalton Gregory of Pagosa Springs edged Drake Rhodes; the other at 145 when Joe Zink lost a close decision to Keith Archuleta.

The Wolverines will head to Aztec on Saturday for the annual Aztec Duals.
