Hillcrest offering free cross-country skiing
The Hillcrest Golf Course/Cross Country Ski Area near Fort Lewis College welcomes the community to use the facility to cross-country ski or snowshoe for free.
The course is open seven days a week and has two parking lots. The golf course requests that participants ski on the groomed track.
Donations will be accepted to offset labor and equipment costs. A donation box is located on the course.

A Natural History Snowshoe Workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Haviland Lake. The cost is $5 for members and $10 for nonmembers. Snowshoe rentals will be available for $3. A Full Moon Snowshoe Hike under the Wolf Moon will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Haviland Lake. The hike is free for members and $10 for nonmembers. A cross-country ski trip will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday east of Vallecito Lake. Participants can track or skate-ski the groomed trails at their own pace. There is a suggested donation of $5 to $10. A classic cross-country ski clinic will take place at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Nordic Center at Purgatory across U.S. Highway 550 and about 1/3 mile north of Durango Mountain Resort. The clinic will be free to members. Classes for beginners and intermediate skiers will be offered. Equipment rentals are available on site with a classic setup for $7 for members. People renting equipment should arrive 20 minutes early. A donation of $5 will be accepted to be given to the instructors. A donation of $3 will be accepted to carpool. Nordic Center to host annual Langlauf Race
The Nordic Center at Purgatory on Saturday will host its annual Langlauf Race.
Adults can choose between 30-kilometer and 15K races in the skate-ski event. Juniors will race shorter distances.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. at the Nordic Center, with races starting at 10 a.m. The cost is $25 for adults and $10 for juniors.
The event is sponsored by Pine Needle Mountaineering.
