Alex Herrera had a weekend to remember.

And when Monday rolled around, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference remembered it, too.

Herrera, a sophomore center for the No. 20 Fort Lewis College men’s basketball team, became the first FLC men’s player to sweep both the RMAC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards in the same week since the league first began handing out two separate awards during the 2010-11 season.

The 6-9 Ignacio High School product earned the accolades with the two most dominant performances of his young career. He had a career-high 24 points to go with 11 rebounds and eight blocked shots in a victory Friday over Colorado Christian, the second time in three games he’d swatted eight shots.

One night later, Herrera had 21 points, nine rebounds and eight blocks in a 71-69 win over Colorado School of Mines. And his dunk at the buzzer provided the winning margin to push Fort Lewis to 14-2 overall and 11-2 in conference, where the Skyhawks are tied for second with Adams State heading into a matchup with the Grizzlies on Saturday in Alamosa.

“Alex was sensational at both ends of the court,” FLC head coach Bob Hofman said in a news release. “We’re really proud of the way he’s developing and maturing both on and off the court.”

Herrera, in his first year as a full-time starter, leads the league in blocks per game with 2.9 and field goal percentage at 60.7 percent. He’s up to fourth with 8.4 rebounds per game, as well.

The only other Skyhawk basketball player to sweep the weekly awards was former women’s basketball standout Dana Schreibvogel. She pulled it off twice during the 2010-11 season, a year in which she finished as the RMAC Player of the Year.
