La Plata County Fair seeking theme ideas

The La Plata County Fair Board is accepting theme ideas for the 2012 La Plata County Fair.

Themes should reflect the family and community nature of the fair. The theme or slogan should be 10 words or less.

Artwork is encouraged and can be dropped off with theme concept submissions at the La Plata County Extension Office at the fairgrounds or mailed to: La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301. Submissions should be labeled with a name and telephone number.

Entries must be received by 5 p.m. Feb. 28. The winner will receive a $100 cash prize.

Centura Health to help people quit tobacco

Centura Health will offer a live online chat about quitting tobacco from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

During the chat at www.centura.org/quit-tobacco-chat or under the “Live Chats” tab on the Centura Health Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CenturaHealth, Dr. Steven Wright, an addiction specialist, will respond to questions in real time and provide information about types of addiction and treatment therapies. Wright has practiced medicine for more than 30 years and treats teens and adults for addiction.

Winter Sports spaghetti dinner to be held

The annual Durango Winter Sports Foundation spaghetti dinner will take place Friday at the Durango Elk’s Lodge, 901 East Second Ave.

The dinner will include Mutu’s Italian Kitchen pasta, items from Bread bakery, and Ska Brewing Co. beer. The first seating will begin at 4:30 p.m. and the second seating will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $9 for adults and $5 for kids.

City of Durango to hold meeting

The city of Durango will host a public meeting to present the Land Use and Development Code from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

The Land Use and Development Code sets out the rules for the use and development of land within city limits and is in the process of being updated. At this meeting, the city’s consultant will present an overview of the Draft Land Use and Development Code. A similar presentation will be made at the City Council meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and will be televised on City Span 10.

Bayfield library garden club to meet

The Lavenia McCoy Public Library’s community garden club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive in Bayfield, to design the group’s structure.

The group will be in charge of developing plans to maintain the garden and also work with staff members to orchestrate community-wide learning programs. People are invited to join the group.
