Gulliford to relive western journeys

Durango Public Library will host Andrew Gulliford from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday for his presentation “Journeys and Wagons West: Families, Covered Wagons and the Settlement of the American West.”

Gulliford will speak about the journeys of 250,000 Americans who emigrated westward between the California Gold Rush and the Civil War.

He will provide an emphasis on women who moved west and their experiences. Fort Lewis College students will join Gulliford by describing six women’s diaries on the westward movement.

Those attending the presentation will be encouraged to talk about their own family histories or their own research into American journeys by covered wagon. This presentation coincides with the “Journey Stories” Smithsonian exhibit currently on display at the Animas Museum.

Miniatures club meeting is themeless

The Four Corners Miniatures Club will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at a member’s home in Durango. This month will be an “open workshop” for members to bring a project to work on.

This is an excellent opportunity to get assistance and inspiration from other club members to complete a miniature project. Bring a bag lunch.

For directions or more information, contact Marilyn White at 259-9401 or paintedlady49@frontier.net. Learn more about the club at www.4cornersminis.com.

Durango museum to show ‘Las Marthas’

Durango Community Cinema will present “Las Marthas” at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Durango Discovery Museum, 1333 Camino del Rio. In the lingering aftermath of the U.S.-Mexican War, the border town of Laredo, Texas, created an annual debutante ball unlike any other.

The film follows two Mexican-American girls carrying this gilded tradition on their shoulders during a time of economic uncertainty and tension about immigration.

The free screening will be followed by a community discussion led by Lourdes Carrasco, emeritus professor of Hispanic Civilization and Literature at Fort Lewis College and a former Martha debutante. “Las Marthas” will be shown again Feb. 25 at Ignacio Community Library.

Museum to host Valentine’s event

Durango Discovery Museum, 1333 Camino del Rio, will host “Totally Inappropriate Date Night” from 7 to 9 p.m. today. The event will incorporate the sentimental (flowers, tablecloths, dessert, wine) with the scientific (scalpels, forceps, latex gloves). Because what could be more romantic than dissecting a heart together? Well, probably lots of things, but this is a date night that’s sure to explore the “chemistry of love.”

Tickets cost $20 per couple, available at the museum or by phone at 403-1740.
