PERA to host a speaker series

State employees and retirees are encouraged to attend the Public Employees Retirement Association’s Speaker Series sponsored by La Plata School and Public Employees Retirement Association. All meetings will begin at 6 p.m.:

Carole Wright, chairwoman of the board of trustees will speak Monday at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 419 San Juan Drive.

Greg Smith, PERA president, will speak March 22 at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Sandy Patton, Colorado School & Public Employees Retirement Association president, will speak April 22 at a location to be determined.

Participants are asked to bring a food donation for the food bank.

Ignacio library announces events

The Ignacio Community Library, 470 Goddard Ave., will host these events:

A computer class titled “Exploring the Internet” will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. The class will offer tips and pointers about efficiently navigating the World Wide Web.

“Lincoln Comes Alive” with John Voehl, Abraham Lincoln presenter and historian, will be held Tuesday. Sign-up is necessary.

A computer class called “Google Drive” will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 9. People will learn how to create, edit and share documents.

A computer class called “Staying Safe Online” will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 16. This class will examine basic precautions people can take in order to stay safe online.

A writers workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 16.

A computer class called “Microsoft Word” will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 23. This class will look at Microsoft Word and some of the program’s features.

A garden planning class will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 23. The class will present a variety of topics from seed starting to fall harvest.

90-minute bird walk scheduled for Saturday

A bird walk will be hosted by the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory at 9 a.m. Saturday at For the Birds, 1560 East Second Ave.

Participants will explore the habitat along the Animas River Trail around the Durango Fish Hatchery and Huck Finn Pond. The will walk last 90 minutes. Participants should bring binoculars. The event is free, but donations to the hosting group are welcome.
