FLC rallies to victory in 2nd half

The Fort Lewis College women’s basketball team rallied in the second half Friday night for another Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road win.

The Skyhawks broke a 34-34 halftime tie and defeated Western New Mexico 74-62 in Silver City, N.M.

“Give Western New Mexico a lot of credit. They played hard ... inspired,” FLC head coach Jason Flores said.

“But we did what we needed to do to win by 12 points.”

Four Skyhawks scored in double figures, led by Ashley Kuchar’s game-high 18 points.

Former Pagosa Springs High School all-state product Mary Brinton scored a career-high 17 points. She also had nine rebounds. Brinton, who did not miss a shot from the floor in the first half, scored 15 of her points in the opening half.

“Mary gave us huge production off the bench,” Flores said.

Former Durango High School all-state star Katerina Garcia scored 12 points with nine assists in the RMAC win.

Fellow point guard Alex Easterbrook also scored in double figures. She had 12 points, including three 3- pointers.

Jelesia Gray led the Mustangs with 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

“When we got down (in the second half), we didn’t panic. We stepped up another notch,” Flores said.

Western N.M. took a 57-56 lead with 7 minutes, 24 seconds to play. But the Skyhawks answered with an 8-1 run to take control.

Morgan Wohltman and Desiree Young added 12 points each for Western N.M. (3-17, 2-14 RMAC).

FLC (11-8, 10-5 RMAC) will play another RMAC game at N.M. Highlands at 6 p.m. today in Las Vegas, N.M.
