For the second time this year, Alex Herrera is the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
The Fort Lewis College men’s basketball sophomore earned top offensive honors after averaging 21 points, nine rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game in a loss to Western New Mexico and win over New Mexico Highlands this weekend.
In the loss to the Mustangs, Herrera was 8 of 8 from the field and picked up his eighth double-double of the year with 20 points and 12 rebounds to go with three blocks.
He added 22 points and six rebounds in the victory over the Cowboys, hitting 8 of 11 field-goal attempts to finish the weekend 16 of 19 from the field to help boost his league-leading field-goal percentage.
“Alex has really become very consistent,” FLC head coach Bob Hofman said in a news release. “He’s always present for potential blocked shots. It’s nice to see how his hard work is paying off. His potential to improve is still unbelievable.”
Herrera, an Ignacio High School alumnus, swept Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors on Jan. 28 after dominating performances in wins over Colorado Christian and Colorado School of Mines.
The Skyhawks (15-4, 12-4 RMAC) are in the midst of a tight three-way battle for second place in the conference. They return home this weekend, starting with a 7:30 p.m. game Friday against CSU-Pueblo before playing UC-Colorado Springs at the same time Saturday at Whalen Gymnasium.
