Continuing education available at FLC

The Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these classes:

“Facebook for Business” with Lindsay Nyquist, FLC’s social media coordinator, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 19 and 26. Participants will discuss social media strategy and best practices for creating posts, engaging with customers, monitoring a brand and making sense of metrics. The cost is $79 for two classes.

“Funds Flow When Relationships Grow! Nonprofit Management” training with Peter Maiurro, Deanna Devereaux and Susan Lander will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 25 and 26. This course will focus on the successes and benefits of relationship building in nonprofit organizations. The cost is $69 for two classes.

Durango to change early education

Durango School District is actively working to improve and expand how it provides quality, developmentally-appropriate services for children who are 3 to 5 years of age.

The district is implementing changes in the 2013-14 school year. The kindergarten birthday entrance date will be moved from Oct. 1 to Sept. 1.

If a child turns 5 years old in September, he or she will be assessed to determine if the appropriate classroom will be in a preschool or kindergarten class.

If the better placement for the child is preschool, parents will not be charged tuition for that child. The district will offer half-day programs that will operate both in the mornings and afternoons for three hours each.

Students across region named to Who’s Who

These local students at Fort Lewis College have been named to the 2013 listing of “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges”:

Special education committee to meet

DHS cheerleaders to host cheer clinic

Durango High School cheerleaders will host a cheer clinic for grades kindergarten to eighth from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday.

Groups will be divided by age. Participants will learn a cheer and dance that will be performed alongside the DHS cheerleaders at the boys varsity basketball game on the same day.

The cost is $25 and includes a snack and T-shirt. Check-in will begin at 8:45 a.m. and a parent or guardian needs to be present to sign a waiver.

Scholarships available to Durango seniors

Durango Foundation for Educational Excellence is offering six scholarships to graduating seniors from Durango School District high schools.

The application deadline is at 5 p.m. April 1. Packets also will be available through the school counseling offices.

Parenting class set for Animas Valley

A six-week Love and Logic Parenting Class will be offered at Animas Valley Elementary School from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays from Feb. 27 to April 3 in the counselor’s room.

The fee for the class is $35 for single parents or $40 per couple, which includes a parent handbook, child care and snacks. Scholarships are available as needed.

Child care provider, Cody Reinheimer, will offer creative play time with the kids. A portion of their time will be devoted to exploring a series of activities called “Compassionate Communication for Kids” based on the work of Marshall Rosenberg in the area of non-violent communication.

Durango schools to be closed for winter break

Durango School District schools will be closed from Feb. 18 to 22 for winter break.

Spring sports to begin Feb. 25 at DHS

Spring sports, which include baseball, boys swimming, girls golf, girls soccer, girls tennis, boys and girls lacrosse, and boys and girls track will officially begin Feb. 25.

A completed athletic form must be on file in the activity director’s office for every student participating in interscholastic athletic competition.

No student will be permitted to participate in any athletic program without the forms on file by the first day of practice. Forms must be returned to the athletic office to get a red card before Feb. 25.

The athletic office will be open and available to issue red cards from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 22.

Participation fees of $75 must be paid before receiving a red card. If this is a financial hardship, call Sheldon Keresey, athletic director.

Discovery Museum announces programs

The Durango Discovery Museum, 1333 Camino del Rio, will offer these programs:

Valentine’s Heart Dissection will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday. The program will feature actual hearts, actual dissection tools and wine.

Senior care conference scheduled for Feb. 27

The third annual “Community Challenge: Meeting the Needs of Seniors, Providers and Caregivers” will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 27 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.
