Prospects furnish FLC lacrosse with Front Range skills

The Skyhawks added some Front Range flavor to the lacrosse program as part of their early signing recruiting class.

Mountain Vista High School’s Marisa Mills and Castle View’s Brieonna Walker signed national letters of intent during the NCAA’s early signing period, alongside Oregon’s Megan Longtain and California’s Shea Wales. All four will graduate this spring.

From Highlands Ranch, the 5-7 Mills has six years of lacrosse experience, in addition to playing volleyball for Mountain Vista.

“Marisa will be a great addition to our squad next year,” FLC’s third-year head lacrosse coach Kelsey MacDonald said in a news release to The Durango Herald. “She is a solid midfield and reads the field well both on attack and on defense.”

From Castle Rock, Walker will do her part in the goal.

A 5-8 goalkeeper, she’ll be a four-year starter for Castle View, also earning an All-Continental League honorable mention as a junior.

“She is a solid goalie who is dedicated to always improving and great work ethic. All of her coaches have nothing but positive comments about Brie’s leadership both on and off the field,” MacDonald said.

Longtain, from West Linn, Ore., is a 5-7 midfielder/defender, and also will be a four-year prep starter in addition to playing basketball, where she helped her high school to a fifth-place finish in the state tournament as a junior.

In lacrosse, she earned honorable mention in all-league accolades last season while helping her team to a runner-up finish at the Oregon state championships.

As a sophomore and a junior, she ranked among the top five in her conference in assists, draw controls and groundballs.

Wales, from Oakland, Calif., is a 5-5 midfielder/defender. She’s started the last two years at center, attack and defensive wing. She first picked up a lacrosse stick as a freshman.

“Shea is an excellent athlete who has a great field sense from also playing competitive soccer in high school,” MacDonald said. “She is a hard worker.”

The Skyhawks will open their 2013 season Feb. 22 against Colorado Mesa at Grand Junction after finishing the 2012 season 7-8, 4-4 in the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.
