The Demons were hoping for six or seven; they only got three.
Only three Durango High School wrestlers placed at the regional tournament to earn berths to the CHSAA Class 4A Wrestling State Championships next weekend in Denver.
Matthew Lavengood took second at 113 pounds after the two-day tournament ended Saturday in Montrose, Nick Tarpley placed third at 152 and Daniel Gustavson third at 220.
“They weren’t first places,” DHS head coach Doug Cuddie said. But “a second and two thirds is better than three fourths.”
Although Cuddie said the three qualifiers have a “really good shot” at placing in the state tournament, he wasn’t happy with how the team as a whole wrestled to wrap regionals.
Nine wrestlers remained Saturday morning after the first day of wrestling.
“Not a really good day for us at all,” Cuddie said. “Not at all. Not at all. This is usually a really good tournament.
“For whatever reason we just weren’t (ready Saturday).”
The Class 4A state tournament will start Thursday night at the Pepsi Center.
“I think if we wrestle like we did (Saturday) and hopefully a little bit better, we can get those guys on the podium,” Cuddie said.
