The defense was its typically stout self. And the Demons found the offense to match.
The Durango High School boys basketball team rolled in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A Southwestern League/Western Slope League District Championships in Grand Junction, topping No. 9 seed Battle Mountain 52-32 on Thursday.
Durango, the top seed, jumped out early and never looked back, holding the Huskies to two points in the first quarter and eight in the first half.
“We pressured them up,” DHS boys basketball head coach Alan Batiste said.
DHS (15-5) brought the pressure offensively, too, led by Willy Frownfelter, Ty Elliott and Isiah Mayberry, who all scored 10 points for the Demons.
“Offensively, we just pushed the ball, but we also showed some poise (Thursday) executing on offense,” Batiste said.
“A lot of scorers in the book. It was good.”
DHS now moves on to the district semifinals, where the Demons will face fourth-seeded Rifle (12-8) – a 29-28 winner over No. 5 Steamboat Springs – at 7:30 p.m. today. The winner will play No. 2 Palisade or No. 3 Eagle Valley in Saturday’s championship game. Durango’s game will be broadcast on KDGO 1240 AM.
