Ignacio High School’s hope of a state wrestling medal is gone.
Ignacio’s only state wrestling contender is out after Day 2 of the CHSAA Class 2A State Wrestling Championships.
Heavyweight Josh Gallegos, the Bobcats’ lone contender, was eliminated with a 7-6 loss to Jarred Zumwalt of Swink.
It was a back and forth match until the end, IHS head coach Bob Overturf said.
“It was a whole mess,” he said with a laugh. But “first year wrestler, come to state, lose two matches by just one point – that’s huge.”
Gallegos also lost his first-round match Thursday by a single point – 2-1 over Lorenzo Trujillo of John Mall.
“He made it to the show, and he wrestled well here,” Overturf said. “He doesn’t have anything to be ashamed of. He battled; he battled, and that’s all I can ask for.”
Paonia leads Class 2A with 142 points. Highland is second with 117.
