Two roadblocks stand between IHS and the SJBL

If the Bobcats can stop the Mavericks’ aces, then they’ll win league

Zero losses.

One win for a league title.

Two girls to stop.

“It’s a big-time game,” Ignacio High School girls basketball head coach Justa Whitt said on the eve of the Bobcats’ San Juan Basin League finale.

Ignacio will face an undefeated Norwood team at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at IHS. If the Bobcats can slow down the Mavericks’ Williams sisters, Whitt said an SJBL title is within reach.

Adding some molasses to Harlie and Jordan Williams’ slick scoring flow won’t be cake, though.

Harlie Williams, a 5-10 senior forward, is averaging about 20 points and nine rebounds per game this year; Jordan Williams, a 5-7 shooting guard, is averaging a dozen points, according to

The duo is a major reason the Mavericks enter Saturday’s matchup with an 18-0 record.

“Pretty much we’ve got to shut both of them down,” Whitt said. “Or if not both of them, at least one of them to cause havoc in their offense.”

Whitt said she’ll be looking to Valerie Armstrong and Gabs Garcia to bring their top game on defense in an adjusted scheme specifically designed to lock down the Williamses.

“If we can slow them down a bit, cut their points in half – we’re not going to be able to stop them from scoring; you can’t do that ... I think that we’ll be OK.”

For their own scoring, Whitt said the Bobcats need Michelle Simmons to take on a leadership role and have another big game. She scored 16 points against Telluride a week ago, and Whitt is looking for that production to continue.

Ignacio’s shooters Sky Cotton and Cloe Seibel will have to add some aerial support from the perimeter, as will Pam Cotton, whom Whitt will try to integrate back into the offense as she recovers from a knee injury earlier in the season.

“She’s one of our best shooters,” Whitt said of Pam Cotton.

A win would give the IHS girls the SJBL title, but the Bobcats already have locked up the No. 1 seed in the district and will host a state tournament playoff game Friday – the opponent to be determined in pigtail games this week.
