Durango’s long road stops short at state

The long road ended a little short for the Demons.

The last two Durango High School wrestlers remaining in the CHSAA Class 4A State Wrestling Championships were eliminated in the consolation quarterfinals Saturday at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

At 113 pounds, Matthew Lavengood (31-12) lost a 2-0 decision to Sage Budd (35-6) of Mead to miss the podium.

At 220 pounds, Daniel Gustavson (29-14) lost an 11-6 decision to Damian Garcia (35-10) of Pueblo Centennial to miss the podium.

Budd and Garcia moved on to the consolation semifinals, where Budd took fifth and Garcia sixth, both on the podium.

Durango, behind Gustavson, Lavengood and Nick Tarpley, finished the state tournament with nine points.
