Isabelle Denham Smith, the mother of Durango resident Jean Thweatt, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at the Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Western Colorado in Grand Junction. She was 93. Mrs. Smith died from injuries suffered in an automobile accident on Jan. 31, 2013.
Mrs. Smith was born to Marvin A. and Mary Garrett Denham on Nov. 17, 1919, in Olathe. She was the youngest of seven children and grew up ranching in the Olathe area.
She graduated from Olathe High School in 1937 and married Thomas O. Smith in 1940 in Grand Junction. The Smiths made their home in Uravan until Mr. Smith was called to military service in 1943.
After World War II, the couple started their career in farming around the Olathe area. They ultimately purchased their family farm in Pea Green in 1953, where they raised their family and successfully farmed for 26 years.
Upon their retirement in 1979, the Smiths built a home outside Olathe in the Neal Subdivision and enjoyed playing golf, traveling in their RV and spending time with friends and family.
Mrs. Smith lived in Montrose County all of her life and had been a member of the Olathe United Methodist Church since she was 4. She enjoyed laughing with her friends during lunch three days a week at the Olathe Community Center, going to her monthly lunch date with her card-club girlfriends and spending time with her family. She was an avid Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies fan.
Isabelle was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Tom Smith, in December 1991; and son Melvin A. Smith on March 3, 2011.
She is survived by her daughter, former Riverview Elementary School Principal Jean Thweatt, of Durango; sons Thomas D. Smith of Olathe and M. Richens Smith of Denver; 97-year-old sister Helen Glendening of Montrose; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Feb. 26, 2013, at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel, 802 E. Main St. in Montrose. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at the Olathe United Methodist Church, 518 Hersum Ave. Burial will take place at the Olathe Cemetery immediately after the funeral.
