City Council ballot to have 6 choices

Election forms to be mailed March 15

Voters will have choices to make with six candidates running for three seats on Durango City Council. The race will be decided in a mail-in election with ballots due April 2.

The six candidates made a deadline for the ballot by returning petitions with 25 signatures by 4 p.m. Tuesday.

They are incumbent and former mayor Christina Rinderle, former La Plata Electric Association finance controller Keith Brant, former Durango School District 9-R board member Floyd Patterson, architect Dean Brookie, Ska Brewery Co. server and artist Kristen Smith and technology journalist Jordan Golson.

Current Mayor Doug Lyon is term-limited from running again and Councilor Paul Broderick is not seeking reelection.

Ballots will be mailed March 15. Voters will be asked to vote for three of the six candidates. Election results will be known on the final night of election, April 2.

The top three vote-getters will be sworn into four-year terms during the regular April 16 council meeting. They will join incumbents Sweetie Marbury and Dick White.

Campaign season is well under way with Rinderle distributing green-and-brown campaign signs and Brookie making his candidacy known with a short announcement on Tuesday before 40 supporters at the Durango Transit Center, a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design building that Brookie designed.

Brookie described himself as a “moderate” willing to listen to all sides.

Supporter Laura Godfrey, who said she worked on the campaigns for councilors Marbury and White, said candidates win races to the council by walking the neighborhoods and knocking on doors.

The Durango Chamber of Commerce, the Durango Area Association of Realtors and La Plata Forum are organizing a candidates forum with a buffet lunch at 11:30 a.m. March 12, at the DoubleTree Hotel.

Tickets are $15 for chamber members and $20 for nonmembers. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 247-0312.
