Olga Elizabeth Shry

Longtime Durango resident Olga Elizabeth Shry died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, in Durango. She was 102. The cause of death was declining health because of her old age.

Mrs. Shry was born to Anton and Mary Selan on Aug. 22, 1910, in Silver City, Utah. She was one of 11 children.

She attended Fruit Vale School in Grand Junction through the eighth grade.

In 1930, she married Frank Shry Jr. in Grand Junction. The marriage later ended in divorce.

Mrs. Shry lived on East Fourth Avenue in Durango for 80 years. She clerked at Wegher’s Food Store and Schluter’s Floral.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Slovenian National Benefit Society Lodge. Mrs. Shry enjoyed gardening, crocheting and cooking for her family.

“We loved Sunday dinners at her house,” her family said. “She always thought that a vegetable garden without dill weed or a potato growing in random spots was not really a garden at all.”

Mrs. Shry had lived at Four Corners Health Care Center for the last 5˝ years. She was a favorite of many of the staff members as well as residents, her family said.

Mrs. Shry was preceded in death by her former husband, Frank Shry Jr.

She is survived by her son, Frank Shry, of Durango; sisters Eva Kramer of Oregon and Vida Decker of Washington; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation will occur. The family will gather for a celebration of life at a later date.
