Life of Pi. HHHH Ang Lee’s dreamy take about a boy marooned at sea with a bunch of animals. Rated PG.
Argo. HHHH This mostly true story of a ploy to rescue American hostages in Iran won the Best Picture Oscar while leaving director and star Ben Affleck otherwise empty-handed. Rated R.

Rust and Bone. HHHH (Wednesday only.) Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenaerts star in a bizarre love story between a former bare-fisted fighter and a killer whale trainer in the aftermath of a horrible accident. Rated R.
21 and Over. H½ A promising student plans to celebrate his birthday by having a drink with his buddies but things get a bit out of hand. Rated R.
Jack the Giant Slayer. HHH½ (In standard format and digital 3-D with surcharge.) If Hansel & Gretel can grow up to kill witches, then Jack can grow up to kill Giants. And so he does. (See review this page.) Rated PG-13.
Phantom. HH An ace submarine captain (Ed Harris) butts heads with a murky government type (David Duchovny) in an undersea thriller. Rated R.
The Last Exorcism Part II. (No Ebert rating.) Obviously there’s a battle with demons and whatnot, but I can’t get past the fact that no “last” anything can have a Part II. Rated R.
Dark Skies. (No Ebert rating.) Some people have real problems – in this case some mysterious presence has targeted a suburban couple’s kids for abduction. As if family life in the suburbs wasn’t already a challenge. Rated PG-13.
Snitch. HHH Finally, Duane “The Rock” Johnson is back on the big screen. This time, he makes a deal with the Feds to infiltrate a drug cartel in exchange for freeing his son from a bogus trafficking conviction. Sounds like “Commando” meets “Midnight Express.” Rated PG-13.
Escape From Planet Earth. (No Ebert rating; in standard format and digital 3-D with surcharge.) An astronaut is lured into a trap on a dangerous planet in this animated thing. Rated PG.
A Good Day to Die Hard. H½ John McClane’s been at this so long that now he’s teaming up with his CIA agent son to fight Russians or some such international villainy. Rated R.
Identity Thief. HH In this comedy, a man (Jason Bateman) fights back when a woman (Melissa McCarthy) usurps his personal information for her own gain. Rated R.
