The Ignacio High School boys basketball team made it a clean sweep at the San Juan Basin League Tournament on Saturday in Cortez:
One SJBL Tournament championship for the Ignacio Bobcats’ girls.
One SJBL Tournament championship for the Ignacio Bobcats’ boys.
Ignacio put up matching 20-point quarters in the first and second frames to build a 40-28 halftime lead on No. 1 seed Dolores, then finished off the Bears for a 68-51 victory in the conference championship game.
Kelton Richmond had 17 points for IHS, while Adison Jones had 15 points and nine rebounds. Wyatt Hayes chipped in 13 for the Bobcats.
“One thing I noticed about my team is they had a lot more intensity, a lot more spirit and envergy than they usually have,” Ignacio head coach Chris Valdez said. “We just kind of show up to the game, go on the court, play and walk back to the locker room – the emotion doesn’t change much, but (Saturday) we saw a different side of them.”
Ignacio (18-5, 8-2 SJBL), on the merits of its district championship, will host regionals next weekend at Durango High School. Details of the Class 2A regional tournament will be released today.
“Obviously we’ll get a top eight seed as district champion, and with four or five No. 1 district seeds already losing, that might step us up to six, five or even four depending on how the last district championships end up,” Valdez said.
