St. Columba to host St. Pat’s Carnival
St. Columba School’s annual St. Pat’s Carnival will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. March 16 at the school, 1801 East Third Ave.
The event will feature dinner, refreshments and children’s games and prizes. Children’s game tickets will be 25 cents each.
Dinner options will include: corned beef sandwich with sides for $7; corned beef platter with sides for $10; and kids hot dogs for $5. A cash bar will be available with beer and wine.

Scholarship available to 9-R students
The Durango Foundation for Educational Excellence added another scholarship to the line of awards it offers to graduating seniors from Durango School District high schools.
The new DLM Family Scholarship will support a student heading for studies and a career in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), medical, business or education fields.
The award is for $10,000 maximum per year, renewable for three more years. The application deadline is April 1.
Durango Arts Center announces classes
Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave., will offer these classes:
“Art Journaling” will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Fridays from March 1 to 29 and April 5 to May 3. This group will explore the potential of journaling with the direction of teaching artists sharing ideas, mediums and techniques.
“Drawing the Human Head” will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays from March 5 to 26. Participants will learn the fundamentals of charcoal portrait drawing.
“Watercolor Basics II” will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays from March 6 to April 3. This is a continuing class for students who have some watercolor experience.
“Beginning Bookbinding Structures for Adults” will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays from March 18 to April 15. This class is an overview of bookbinding.
“Young Adult Beginning Bookbinding,” for ages 12 to 18, will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Mondays from March 18 to April 15. Students will come to understand bookbinding.
“Beginning Drawing” will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays from March 13 to April 17. Participants will learn how to draw realistically using charcoal and newsprint.
“Basket Making” will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 16. Participants will learn to weave a wall mail basket.
“Drawing II” will be held from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays from March 19 to April 30. Participants will learn about drawing from one and two point perspective by rendering a building in proper perspective.
Fort Lewis College offers continuing education
Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these classes:
“Basic Digital Photography” will be offered by Paul Boyer from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 16. Course topics will include understanding how cameras work, selecting camera settings, getting the best possible image quality, downloading images from the camera to the computer, organizing photos on the computer and examining the various possibilities for presenting images to friends and family. The cost is $74 for one class.
“Travel Writing” will be taught by Will Gray on Thursday evenings from March 21 to April 25. Participants will learn how to translate the knowledge and emotion gained from traveling to a new place into clear and compelling language. The cost is $129 for six classes.

The presentation “Planning, Prepping, and Paying for College” will be hosted by Gisele Pansze of Compass College Consulting and Mark Greenstein of IvyBound from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.
The Liberty School to offer visitors day
The Liberty School, 215 E. 12th St., will have a visitors day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 20.
The Liberty School is a small, private school that maximizes the potential of dyslexic, gifted and twice exceptional (both gifted and dyslexic) children.

21st Century Classroom discussion canceled
The Durango School District community forum about the 21st Century Classroom to be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at Durango High School has been cancelled.
The district will send the rescheduled time once it has been determined.
Gifted, talented meeting set for today
A Gifted and Talented Advisory meeting will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today in the Escalante Middle School Media Center.
There will be a discussion to revise and improve gifted and talented services throughout the Durango School District.

The Durango School District Elementary Music Festival will be held at 7 p.m. April 2 in the Durango High School gymnasium.
FLC to host meeting about paying for college
Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will host an information session called “Understanding If and How You Can Afford College” at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the center’s Lyceum Room, No. 120.
Several FLC offices, including financial aid, admissions, the Program for Academic Advancement and STEM3, will answer questions. This event is free and open to the public.
