Nanna G. Alford

Durango resident Nanna G. Alford died Friday, March 1, 2013, at Sunshine Gardens Country Home in Durango. She was 96.

Mrs. Alford was born to Paul and Alice Gum on Sept. 24, 1916, in Bayfield. She earned a degree in English and drama from Drake University.

Her first job was as a sixth-grade teacher in Bayfield, and she held numerous teaching positions during her 10-year teaching career.

On May 16, 1940, she married Seymour V. Alford in Tierra Amarilla, N.M. Mr. Alford went off to serve in the military during World War II, and Mrs. Alford worked for Continental Trailways in Durango while he was overseas.

After the war, Mr. Alford went to work for Swift & Co., and the company transferred them several places, including Denver, Chicago and Kansas City, Kan.

Mrs. Alford was an only child who gave birth to an only child who gave birth to an only child.

She lived in Durango for several periods before she and her husband retired to her parents’ former home on West Third Avenue in 1978.

In 1998, she moved to Sunshine Gardens West and had lived the past four years at Sunshine Gardens County Home.

During her years in Durango, Mrs. Alford was involved in the community. She was an active member of Neo-Delphians, Chapter BR of P.E.O. and the Four Corners Rose Society. Mrs. Alford served as an election judge, was an avid bridge player and enjoyed travel. Her favorite destinations included Mykonos, Greece and Fiji.

During the past 12 years, her daughter and son-in-law, Gay and Lou Kiene, and granddaughter and her husband, Tara and Charlie Kiene, were an important part of her caregiving team.

Mrs. Alford was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Seymour Alford, in 1991.

She is survived by her daughter, Gay Kiene, of Durango; and one granddaughter.

A time of celebration will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Mrs. Alford’s home, 1807 West Third Ave.
