Former Durango resident Jo Ann T. Mickelson died Monday, March 4, 2013, in Albuquerque. She was 87.
Mrs. Mickelson was born to Lester and Anna Matney on Sept. 30, 1925, in Albuquerque. She was one of four children.
She went to school in both Albuquerque and Los Lunas, N.M. After graduating from high school, she began working at the Santa Fe Railroad.
On July 4, 1947, she married Cecil Mickelson in Albuquerque. The couple soon moved to Durango, where they began making jewelry together. They owned and operated Mickelson Jewelry.
In 1974, the Mickelson family moved to Bisbee, Ariz., where they mined turquoise. They returned to Durango in 1976.
Mrs. Mickelson moved to Albuquerque about five years ago to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Shauna and Javier Hernandez.
“Jo Ann’s life was completely dedicated to her husband and children,” her family said. “She was very active in her church and held various positions within the church.”
Mrs. Mickelson was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Mickelson; and children Melody Mickelson, Cecil Narlin Mickelson, Joel Lester Mickelson, Dee Ann Barker and Peter Quinn Mickelson.
She is survived by her daughter Shauna Hernandez of Albuquerque; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stakehouse in Durango, 2 Hilltop Circle. A funeral will take place at 2 p.m., also Saturday at the stakehouse. Brother Thomas Gurr will officiate.
