Marvel resident Mark Edward Betley died of esophageal cancer Sunday, March 10, 2013, at his home. He was 63.
Mr. Betley was born to Edward and Mary Alice (Austermiller) Betley on Jan. 19, 1950, in Toledo, Ohio. He graduated from Bedford High School in Temperance, Mich., and received his education in general aviation in Denver.
On April 11, 1969, Mr. Betley enlisted in the Army in Monroe, Mich. He served for two years in Vietnam, where he was attached to the 101st and 82nd Airborne in communications. He also was trained as a Green Beret. Mr. Betley was discharged with the rank of sergeant in December 1971.
On Feb. 25, 1976, he married Carlene Joy Wynn in Toledo.
Mr. Betley began his career as a flight instructor and owner at Castlewood Aviation in Denver in 1977. He later retired from W.W. Grainger in Farmington, where he was a customer service representative.
The Betleys moved to Bayfield in 1990 and to Marvel in 2000.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed flying and rebuilding antique tractors.
Mr. Betley is survived by his wife of 37 years, Carlene Joy Betley, of Marvel; mother, Mary Alice (Austermiller) Betley, of Temperance; sons David Hawkins of Marvel and Joe Hawkins of Durango; brothers Gerald Betley of Kingman, Ariz., and Kenneth Betley of Upper Marlboro, Md.; sisters Catherine Betley-Fotino of Flagstaff, Ariz., Theresa Horvath of Petersburg, Mich., and Annette Overmann of Ottawa Lake, Mich.; four grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 16, 2013, at the Marvel Grange Hall, 217 County Road 133A.
