Auction to be held for local cyclist hit by truck

A silent auction will be held next month for a Durango cyclist who was run over Nov. 8 by a truck in Bodo Industrial Park.

Elizabeth “Betsy” Richards was riding her bicycle southbound on West Frontage Road when a driver in a northbound pickup turned left into a parking lot without seeing her.

The auction will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. April 3 at Irish Embassy Pub. Items such as artwork and cycling gear will be available, said Greg Smith, one of the event’s organizers. The proceeds will go to the Richards family to help with medical bills and other expenses.

“It’s such a great community for this kind of thing. It’s one of the things that make this a great community to live in,” Smith said.

Richards returned to Durango at the beginning of February after being treated for her injuries at St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, where she was airlifted after the accident. She suffered a broken wrist and multiple fractures to her pelvis.
