The Demons keep leaning on their bats, and that keeps working just fine.
The Durango High School baseball team beat Los Alamos 8-6 in the first round of the Piedra Vista Tournament on Thursday in Farmington.
“We’re good with our bats,” DHS head coach Rob Coddington said. “We’re aggressive; we can hit the ball on the nose.”
Jeremy Szura went 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and two runs batted in, and Isiah Mayberry went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
Durango combined for 10 hits.
With Dayne Rowley on the mound to start, the Demons jumped to a 4-0 lead until the Hilltoppers finally got on the board in the third, then took a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth.
Rowley pitched five innings with four strikeouts and two walks for the win.
“Dayne Rowley did a nice job extending his appearance to five innings,” Coddington said.
The Demons answered with four more in the bottom of the sixth and closer Blake Dunlap held Los Alamos to a single run in the seventh for the save.
Coddington said the game was another solid outing for Durango, which just needs to work on cleaning up its defense.
“But the guys worked hard and held on for the win,” he said.
Durango (5-1) will play the winner of Piedra Vista-Miyamura at 4:30 p.m. today at Ricketts Field in Farmington to continue the tournament.
