It’s Durango vs. Germany.Matthew Lavengood and Nick Tarpley, two of the Durango High School wrestling team’s top competitors last season, will help pit the Western Slope’s best against Germany’s high school national wrestling team Saturday in Grand Junction.The two Demons were selected to fill slots on a Western Slope all-star team, which will wrestle the Germans starting at 9 a.m. Saturday at Grand Junction High School.“It’s real cool. Real cool,” DHS head coach Doug Cuddie said in a phone call to The Durango Herald on Wednesday night. “They came and sought out the best wrestlers on the Western Slope that could go, and it’s pretty cool to take part in.”
The German team has been in Colorado since Monday, Cuddie said. They’ve wrestled in Greeley and Sheridan, and will wrestle Grand Junction Central on Saturday in addition to the all-star team, which includes wrestlers from Olathe, Montrose, Paonia and more.Both Lavengood and Tarpley qualified for the CHSAA Class 4A State Wrestling Championships in February.
