Two Durango men have been arrested by the Southwest Drug Task Force on charges of distributing controlled substances.
Jonathan Huehl, 30, is charged with selling heroin and methamphetamine, as well as attempted distribution. He is being held in the La Plata County jail without bail because of a parole violation.
“We don’t know why he was on parole because it’s out of California.” said Lt. Pat Downs, director of the task force,
The second man, Jay Gaskin, 33, was arrested Wednesday after investigators executed a search warrant March 28 and found 20 grams of heroin in the vehicle he was driving.
“He had been arrested on a couple of warrants when we executed the search,” Downs said. “I don’t know how many doses 20 grams is, but it’s a lot, and 20 grams is definitely indicative of intent to distribute.”
Gaskin, who is being held in the San Juan County jail in Farmington on unrelated charges of possession of heroin, will be extradited to Colorado, where Downs expects he will have a bail of $25,000.
Both arrests took place after a task force investigation lasting several months. The tax force includes investigators from the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office, the Ignacio and Durango police departments and the Bayfield Marshal’s Office.
Downs said investigators are still looking into any possible connections between Gaskin and Huehl and the recent deaths of two Durango men.
La Plata County Coroner Jann Smith suspects that Shane Gibson, 21, and Eric Zwart, 27, may have died as the result of heroin overdoses. The two men died in late March.
