Demons done in by a bad half

Herald Staff Report

Durango shut out Coronado 2-0 on Friday in Colorado Springs, then the Demons’ girls soccer side fell flat against Pine Creek on Saturday afternoon in Colorado Springs.

For one half, anyway.

Pine Creek scored seven goals in the first half against only Lauren Milliet’s goal for the Demons.

That 7-1 score stood as the final.

“They were a really solid team,” Durango High School head coach Dalon Parker said.

“They were just a strong team. They overpowered us in the first half, but in the second half, it was even keel.”

The scoreless second half left the opposing coach impressed and the DHS coach pleased.

Pine Creek coach John Frederick approached Parker after the game and said “he was impressed,” the Demons’ first-year varsity coach said. “He didn’t call the dogs off. We pulled together.”

DHS (5-3-1) will return to Southwestern League play when it hosts Grand Junction Central and Montrose next weekend at Riverview Sports Complex. DHS will play Central at 5 p.m. Friday and Montrose at 11 a.m. Saturday.
