Rose Inez Sanchez Havlik


Former La Plata County resident Rose Inez Sanchez Havlik died Monday, April 8, 2013, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction. She was 59. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Known as Inez, she was born to Aurelio and Aurora (Martinez) Sanchez on Oct. 7, 1953, in Durango. She was one of eight children, and grew up in Arboles, Bayfield and Durango. She attended Durango High School.

In 1970, she married David Rayn in Durango. The couple had three daughters together before the marriage ended in divorce.

Mrs. Havlik worked as a waitress at a number of area restaurants. She had lived in Cortez for about 26 years.

She married Frank Fred “Buddy” Havlik during the 1980s.

“Inez loved to wander and explore, especially the outdoors and nature,” her family said. “She was friendly with everyone she met and never knew a stranger.”

Mrs. Havlik was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Fred Havlik.

She is survived by her daughters Sherry Medina and Christy McGee, both of Moab, Utah, and Gwen Schlehofer of Beaver, Okla.; siblings Ray Sanchez and Jerry Sanchez, both of Ignacio, Theresa Sanchez, Jim Sanchez and Marie Walker, all of Boise, Idaho, and Art Sanchez of Spokane, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a large extended family.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2013, at Ertel Memorial Chapel, 42 N. Market St., in Cortez. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.
