Bayfield soccer puts wind in its sails

BHS girls return the shutout favor to the Mean Moose

Saturday, the Bayfield Wolverines had the wind at their back.

Literally.

With a strong wind behind it, the Bayfield High School girls soccer team scored three second-half goals to beat Alamosa 3-0 at Wolverine Country Stadium and hold on to second place in Region 3.

The Mean Moose (6-3, 5-3 Region 5) are one of just two teams to have beaten the Wolverines (9-2, 7-1 Region 5) this year, a 1-0 game in March in Alamosa.

“We played a lot more like a team, got things a lot more dialed in,” BHS head coach Jen Zelinski said.

“Everybody was on their game (Saturday).”

Effie Nistler scored twice on breakaway goals with assists from each Andrea Zelinski and Jaida Ross.

“She’s so fast,” coach Zelinski said of Nistler. “If you can get the ball through the defense, she’s going to work hard and get there very time.”

Maddie Duran scored the third on another Andrea Zelinski assist.

BHS will play at 4 p.m. Friday at Ridgway.
