Herald Staff Report

Mark the Skyhawks down for an impressive repeat.

Fort Lewis College softball player Chelsea Rodriguez was chosen as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s Academic Softball Player of the Year when the league announced its all-academic teams recently.

Rodriguez, a first-team selection last year, follows former Skyhawk Stephanie Janes as the award’s winner. The award is given to the player the league’s sports information directors deem the best combination of player on the field and student in the classroom based on their total votes for members of the first and second teams.

Rodriguez entered the season carrying a 3.62 grade-point average as a history major. The junior third baseman is enjoying another strong season, hitting .386 with eight home runs and 27 RBIs. Her on-base percentage of .526 is good for second in the RMAC and 32nd nationally.

Last season, Rodriguez set FLC single-season records for batting average, hits, runs and walks and was tops in the nation in on-base percentage.

Rodriguez wasn’t the only Fort Lewis player honored for a combination of smarts and softball skills. Kaitlyn Bending, Kassie Haubert and Myndee Thompson all were honor roll selections for their efforts.

Bending carries a 3.59 GPA as an exercise science major. The sophomore outfielder is hitting .327 with 20 runs scored this season.

Haubert is a senior exercise science/athletic training major carrying a 3.49 GPA. In the circle, she’s 4-11 with a 7.31 earned-run average with 59 strikeouts.

Thompson, a sophomore, has a 3.46 GPA as an exercise science major. She’s hitting .282 this season while starting every game at shortstop. Thompson has driven in 12 runs and scored 11 times for FLC.
