Durango golf keeps rust away

Three Demons shoot in the 90s

The Durango High School girls golf team headed south to try and keep the rust away, with solid results.

Brooke Kniffin fired a 92, Reiley Waldo a 95, Haleigh Lyon a 99 and Amanda Rydiger a 113 at Riverview Golf Course in Kirtland, N.M., on Monday.

New Mexico uses four scores instead of three for team totals, leaving the Demons with a total of 399, which DHS head coach Kirk Rawles said he believed was good for third behind Aztec and Kirtland, although DHS didn’t wait for final results before making the short trip home.

“They’re all hitting the ball great,” Rawles said.

Brooke Raney of Aztec fired a 76 to grab medalist honors at the eight-team event.

Kniffin edged closer to her goal of breaking 90 with another solid round. Again, it’s a matter of getting the short game dialed in as postseason golf draws near.

“Brooke’s hitting the ball awesome,” Rawles said. “We just need to spend a little time on chipping and putting.”
