Lester Raymond Vining Jr.

Lester Raymond Vining Jr. died of complications of Parkinson’s disease Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at Pine Ridge Extended Care Home in Pagosa Springs. He was 87.

Mr. Vining was born to Laurel and Lester Vining Sr. on Nov. 16, 1925, in Morley, Mich. He went by Raymond until shortening it to Ray as a teenager.

On Oct. 16, 1948, he married Audrey Jean Armstrong in Stanwood, Mich.

In August 1971, the Vinings and their youngest two daughters moved from Stanwood to Pagosa Springs, where they lived for nine years before settling in Arboles.

Mr. Vining retired from Wolf Creek Industries, where he was employed as a delivery driver hauling loads of house logs throughout Colorado and neighboring states.

“Ray was a hard worker, a real handyman, and could build or repair almost anything,” his family said. “He loved being out in the woods, hunting anything from squirrels to elk or the next load of firewood.”

After his retirement, gardening became his favorite hobby.

Mr. Vining was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1999, his family said, and put up a good fight, but in February 2006, he moved into Pine Ridge Extended Care Home.

Mr. Vining is survived by his wife of more than 64 years, Audrey Vining of Arboles; children Vicki Welsh of Fort Lupton, Gene Vining of Stanwood, Kay Murin of O’Brien, Fla., and Marlene Thayer of Frederick, Okla.; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2013, at Allison Community Presbyterian Church, 2724 County Road 329.
