‘Hang together’ and protect freedoms

I was saddened to be reminded that some of my fellow citizens still harbor know-nothing, ignorant, small-minded, self-defeating and deeply anti-constitutional attitudes toward freedom of religion for those whose beliefs differ from their own.

Many of us have strong feelings about our religious allegiances and antipathies. It is the genius of the American Constitution that allows people of starkly contrasting religious and philosophical tastes and opinions to live and work together in harmony as citizens of a secular republic.

If we want liberty and equality for ourselves, then we must stand up for those whose rights are under attack. If we do not all “hang together,” then surely, as our founding fathers knew, “we shall all hang separately.”
