Wilderness bill an example of cooperation

The organizers of the Hardrock Hundred Endurance Run were extremely pleased to see the recent news that the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee had voted to approve the San Juan Mountains Wilderness Act of 2009 (Senate Bill 341). This legislation is vital to further protect the San Juan Mountains that are central to our economy and way of life.

We would particularly like to express our appreciation for the efforts and cooperation of U.S. Sens. Michael Bennet and Mark Udall as well as the San Juan Citizens Alliance and Sheep Mountain Alliance in helping craft this bill in such a way as to allow continued access for our event while protecting the environment and beauty of this area. We think this bill serves as a great example of groups working together and communicating with each other to reach a mutually beneficial outcome.

We urge everyone who appreciates and utilizes this area to contact his or her congressman and urge a “yes” vote on this bill.

Dale Garland, run director, Hardrock Hundred Endurance Run
