TARA Treasure Trail to be hosted July 13

Residents of Tiffany, Allison and Arboles are asked to sift through their treasures in the attic, garage or elsewhere. The TARA Historical Society will host a Treasure Trail on July 13 and invites all families and organizations to participate.

There will be prize drawings and/or contests for groups participating in the event as well as for customers who shop at the event. For $10, you can be included in a published map and entered to win prizes in the drawing. Prizes will also be offered in a poker run.

West Water Authority plans four meetings

The La Plata West Water Authority has scheduled four public meetings that will take place July 31, Aug. 14, Aug. 29 and Sept. 11 at the Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School gym at 11274 Colorado Highway 140, Hesperus.

The school is in Kline. The Wester Water Authority will present updated information about progress on the rural domestic water system being planned for western La Plata County. All area residents and property owners are encouraged to attend one of these meetings.

Lions’ Club to serve pancake breakfast

The Bayfield Lions’ Club will serve its traditional pancake breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the Lions’ Hall, 451 Church Street, Bayfield.

Breakfast prices will be $7 for adults and $3 for kids younger than 12. After the breakfast, the Bayfield parade will start at 10 a.m., with activities, vendors and entertainment to follow at the Joe Stephenson park facilities.

County to celebrate ‘Independents Week’

This week, Local First is hosting “Independents Week” in La Plata County, which is a nationwide, week-long summer campaign supporting local businesses for their commitment to individuality and efforts to keep economic prosperity and community self-determination.

Local First recognizes independent and locally-owned contributions of time, talent, goods and services. Participating businesses are signified by an Independents Week logo decal displayed on sidewalks in front of their establishments, and are also listed in full-page newspaper advertisements.

Bennet seeks interns for fall semester

Colorado U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet is accepting internship applications from undergraduate students, recent graduates and graduate students for his Washington, D.C., and Colorado offices. In addition to his Washington office, internships are available year-round in Colorado Springs, Denver, Durango, Fort Collins and Pueblo.

Interns at the Washington office will research various policy issues, attend Congressional hearings and briefings, draft correspondence and conduct U.S. Capitol tours for visitors. Colorado interns assist constituent advocates as they meet with and assist Coloradans who need help navigating the federal government, attend local meetings and events, and draft correspondence. Graduate student interns research policy issues and provide recommendations to senior staff members.

For internships in Colorado offices, applicants will be considered on a rolling basis and can apply any time until all positions are filled. Applicants are encouraged to apply before Sept. 1.

The Durango High School Class of 1973 reunion organizing committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday at The Elks Lodge, 901 East Second Ave.

Fort Lewis alumni to host July 4 event

For 2013, the Fort Lewis College Alumni Association is introducing the 4th at the Fort Alumni Gathering. The event offers FLC alumni food, fun and great seats for the fireworks show.

The event will be held at 6 p.m. on the FLC Chapel lawn on Rim Drive. All alumni and their families are invited. Brats, hot dogs and drinks, including beer from Ska Brewing Co., for $1 each. There will also be music, games and prizes, as well as a campus bike tour beginning at 7:45 p.m.
